Manifesto (Of a Sort)
A STRANGE OBJECT IS:
A small press that is awake.
A small press that is informed by the wide-open of West Texas and the boomtown of Austin.
A small press that is run by women.
A small press that believes the best art comes from the joining of hard work and a savage vision; of awareness and tumult; of the clear-eyed and the wild-eyed.
A small press that does not suffer fools.
A small press that puts our money on the short story, the essay, the novella, the novel.
A small press that will publish a few good things (instead of many somewhat-good things).
A small press that believes in a return to classic, meticulous editing over acquisition-based publishing.
A small press that sees five seconds into the future.
A small press that trusts our readers to take risks with us.
A small press that chooses durable goods and accessible e-goods.
A small press that puts on its noise-canceling headphones—a small press that is noise- canceling headphones.
A small press that puts all of our energy into our writers, and puts our faith in the integrity and discipline of collaboration.
A small press that drinks its coffee black and its bourbon on the rocks.
// Here it is: If fiction is an elemental force, a free-roaming, big-hearted thing, and the best way we know how to engage with and understand and be other people, let’s chase after it. //
A small press that pulls up its boots.
